The new Land Rover Discovery is replacing the LR4, an SUV that's been an option at Land Rover since 2009. Between now and 2019, many Land Rover vehicles will be refreshed or replaced - and this is the most recent. There will even be new additions that add major excitement to the mix, and all will be available to Chicago drivers very soon.

This replacement is the roomier and more fuel-efficient Land Rover Discovery, taking the place of the LR4. It's a larger, full-sized SUV that will officially hit the market midway through 2017. Here are the three major differences between the old LR4 and the brand new Discovery:

1. Lighter Architecture

Even though the Discovery is larger than the LR4, it's weighs 1,000 pounds less than the outgoing model. Out of the 85-percent aluminum construction, 43 percent is recycled.

That lightweight aspect improves both on-road and off-road driving dynamics so that you can explore much more comfortably.

2. Larger Body

The Discovery body as a whole is 5.5 inches longer, the wheelbase is 1.5 inches longer, and the ground clearance is 1.7 inches higher. These numbers improve the spaciousness of the interior and increase the storage space by 65 percent.

3. Additional Seating Options

The redesigned Discovery comes standard with five seats, just as the LR4 had, but also comes with the option of seven seats. The rear seats are engineered in a stadium seating style with each row being positioned higher than the one in front. Both the second and third rows can be folded down flush to the floor - that can be done by hand, using switches inside the tailgate or C-pillar, through the infotainment touchscreen, and even remotely with the Land Rover InControl smart phone app.

The interior design is as luxurious as you've come to expect with all Land Rover models and the new Discovery will even feature limited edition interior and exterior trim for the U.S. market. Only 529 models will be available with this exclusive look. Expect those to debut at the same time the Discovery itself debuts.

Other features to fall in love with include the optional 10-inch infotainment screen, the automatic start/stop system, and real-time fuel economy readout. Every feature builds on the practicality and versatility of the LR4 before it, showcasing the all-encompassing capability that only a Land Rover holds.

Inside the hood, the efficiency is boosted no matter which engine you choose of the available two. The turbocharged Td6 turbocharged, 3.0-liter, V-6 diesel and the supercharged 3.0-liter, V-6 gas engine both have an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters in place of the six forward speeds of the LR4.
